Viscosupplementation for Osteoarthritic Knee Pain
Osteoarthritis is a disease that can cause pain and stiffness in the joints (i.e., lower back, hips, knees, etc.). The ends of the bones in normal joints are covered with smooth cartilage, which provides protection to these bones. Joints also contain a fluid called synovial fluid, which acts as a cushion or "shock absorber" and lubricates the joint.
In people with osteoarthritis, the synovial fluid becomes thinner and loses its elasticity and ability to provide a good cushion. For this and other reasons, the cartilage covering the ends of the bones begins to break down and wear away, sometimes enough to expose the bones themselves.
Osteoarthritis may be caused by many factors, including:
- Excessive wear on the joints
- Age, although osteoarthritis does not occur in all people as they age
- Obesity, especially with osteoarthritis of the knees
- A small deformity of the bones in a joint
- Joint injuries from sport
- Work-related activities or accidents

The main symptom of osteoarthritis is pain. You may feel pain during movement and even at rest. Your joints may also be stiff and swollen, and you may even experience a loss of range of movement in the joint. The symptoms of osteoarthritis may interfere with your normal activities, such as walking and dressing, and they may also disrupt your sleep.
Osteoarthritis can affect any joint. If you have osteoarthritis of the knee, you may feel tenderness in the knee area and pain during movement of the knee.
You may also feel a "grating" or "catching" sensation in the joint during movement. The large muscles around your knee will become weaker with time if pain prevents you from moving or exercising the leg.
What is Viscosupplementation?
Viscosupplementation has been studied as a treatment for osteoarthritis since the 1970s. It is a procedure that can help restore and increase the cushioning and lubrication of osteoarthritic synovial, or joint, fluid. This procedure is not a cure for osteoarthritis of the knee; it is a treatment that may reduce or eliminate pain that occurs with this condition.
With viscosupplementation, a gel that is similar to healthy synovial fluid is injected into your knee joint. The goals of viscosupplementation are to
- Restore the properties of shock absorption and lubrication to diseased synovial fluid.
- Reduce or stop the pain from osteoarthritis of the knee.
- Improve mobility.

How successful is Viscosupplementation?
The success of viscosupplementation may depend on how well the fluid restores the elasticity and lubrication of the synovial fluid. Individual results may vary.
The product used by Clinica Tarraula is called SYNVISC (Hylan G-F 20). It is a viscosupplementation product that has been proven to provide pain relief from osteoarthritis of the knee for up to 6 months. The elastic and lubrication properties of SYNVISC are similar to those of synovial fluid from healthy joints in 18- to 27-year-old adults. |
What is Synvisc ?
Synvisc is ideal for those who do not respond to more conservative methods of osteoarthritis management. The injections can also provide relief for those waiting for knee replacement operations and, in some cases, even delay the need for the operation.
Synvisc is not a drug in the normal sense of the meaning. It does not carry the same concerns or risks of some other joint injections, such as steroids.
It is a widely accepted, safe and effective therapy that can provide long lasting pain relief and it can be an alternative to prescription medications such as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories) and intra-articular steroids. SYNVISC is generally well tolerated. The most commonly reported side effects are temporary pain, swelling and/or fluid accumulation in the injected knee. Synvisc is administered as a course of 3 injections given at weekly intervals.
