MACULAR DEGENERATION
Macular Degeneration This problem normally affects the elderly but can be seen as hereditary ocular disease in younger people. It is generally found in older people as a hereditary or genetically determined disease, which leads to loss of central vision but never to complete blindness.

With early diagnosis it can be treated to some extent by laser therapy and intra-ocular injections of Lucentis. This is a day care treatrnent which mnust be executed in exceedingly sterile conditions. Repeat treatments may have to be carried out depending on severity of the case.
LOW VISION
Examination and prescription for low vision aids.
OCULAR PLASTIC SURGERY
Ocular Plastic Reconstructive Surgery involves
  • Correction of scars after accidents
  • Removal of tumours of the eyelids including xanthelasma
  • Correction of poor vision due to sagging eyelids
Grandmother and Grandson
Dr Hagemans specialises in ocular plastic surgery and is able to do eyelid corrections - both upper and lower lids in Clinica Tarraula as a day care operation.

Please note that for medical/technical reasons it is NOT advisable to do both upper and lower lids at the same time

For Ocular Plastic Reconstructive Surgery a comprehensive pre-operative ophthalmological examination is required initially plus 5-8 weekly post-operative controls. With surgery for eyelid corrections the sutures are normally removed one week after the operation.

EYE SURGERY
  • Cataract:
Symptoms include a loss of vision despite proper correction with prescribed glasses. This is a problem that can occur at all ages but is mainly found in the older population due to ageing and/or due to metabolic changes whereby the lens becomes discoloured and cloudy. The operation involves removing the cloudy lens material from its capsule or bag enabling a new lens to be inserted. No hospitalisation is required. Following the operation 7-8 post operative controls are required plus, if necessary, a prescription of new glasses.

  • Glaucoma:
This raised pressure within the eye usually goes unnoticed until there is a sudden total loss of vision. Glaucoma is a hereditary problem. Should any member of your family suffer from glaucoma you are strongly advised to have regular ophthalmologic examinations.

  • Retinal detachment:
Retinal detachment can involve partial loss of vision after experiencing flashes and floaters before the eye and can result ultimately in blindness. It can be detected in its early stages by proper ophthalmological examination. An operation using a laser can be successful for minor detachments of the retina but complex operative measures are needed for major retinal detachments.

  • Eye Surgery Eye Tumours:
Very special techniques are essential for eye tumours surgery.
There are two types of eye tumour.
    • Retinoblastoma, which are often found in the very young and
    • Melanoma, which are generally found in people of middle age or older.
Both types of tumour can be deadly if not diagnosed and treated in time.
Symptoms usually involve a loss of vision or loss of part of the visual field, such as a shadow in your field of vision. In very young children, initial symptoms often show themselves a squint.

Although these symptoms do not always indicate an eye tumour they must always be examined minutely to determine the underlying illness or disease.
