neural theraphyThe Huneke brothers from Germany discovered the remarkable effects of a local anaesthetic called procaine (Novocain) on the nervous system in the 1940s. They are responsible for the name “Neural Therapy”.

Neural Therapy is a gentle healing technique that involves the injection of local anaesthetics into autonomic ganglia, peripheral nerves, scars, glands, acupuncture points, trigger points, skin and other tissues. It is proving to be is an excellent treatment for acute injuries, chronic pain and scars.

Neural therapy works at the level of the sympathetic nervous system by breaking up “interference fields”, which bring pain to the tissues and nerve endings. Interference fields can be found anywhere on the body. They are frequently associated with scars and known trauma sites.

Interference fields can be caused by:
  • Infections.
  • Emotional trauma.
  • Physical Trauma from any type of surgery, accidents, deep cuts, biopsies, childbirth, dental procedures, vaccinations, burns, tattoos, etc.

General stress from illness, malnutrition, emotional stress, food allergies, pregnancy, etc. then seems to convert an inactive interference field to one that creates a disturbance.

According to the German scientific literature interference fields can cause:
Headaches Migraines Allergies Confusion
Vertigo Hay Fever Optic Neuritis Asthma
Chronic Pain Chronic Fatigue Tonsillitis Liver Disease
Menstrual Pain Sinusitis Chronic Infections Menstrual Irregularity
Gallbladder Disease Eczema Rheumatoid Arthritis Lupus
Arthritis …and many other chronic degenerative conditions.

neural therapyBy injecting a small amount of a local anaesthetic called lidocaine into the tissues at the site of pain, the interference fields are broken down and healing begins.

Disrupting the interference fields gives the damaged nerves a break from the bombardment of neural stimuli causing pain. The blood supply to the painful cells is improved and cellular waste is removed. The associated muscle spasm is relieved and the problem is gradually resolved.

Neural therapy is administered via a series of small injections at the trauma site.  A small amount of lidocaine is injected into the tissue creating a small bump (called a blep) in the skin. lidocaine, which is similar to procaine, is used because it also has many healing properties, especially for damaged nerves. Approximately 15 to 30 tiny injections are injected that feel like small mosquito bites or bee stings.

Treatments are generally repeated weekly until pain is completely eliminated. Although relief is usually gradual, many patients have reported instantaneous relief referred to as the “lightning reaction” of neural therapy.

At Clinica Tarraula we have found Neural Therapy to be particularly effective for the pain that is caused from shingles. Anyone who has suffered from shingles will tell you that the worst part is the pain that lingers long after the rash is gone. Although expected duration of shingles is only 10 to 14 days, the pain that persists after the rash has resolved can last months. The pain called “post-herpetic neuralgia” (PHN) is frequently so intense that it can simulate a heart attack or gallbladder attack. Eliminating this pain is an urgent priority to the shingles sufferer.

More and more medical research in regard to chronic pain is implicating the autonomic nervous system as a cause of pain. Neural Therapy, by helping the autonomic nervous system to function properly, is helping many people to become relieved and cured of their chronic pain. In addition to help for post-herpetic neuralgia neural therapy has been shown to be a highly effective method for treating chronic pain conditions, neck pain, including Temporomandibular Joint, ankle sprains, migraine headaches, painful scars and chronic low back pain.
