The skin is the largest and most visible organ of the body. It reflects the health of the body and acts as a barrier against injury and bacteria. Unfortunately, at one time or another, nearly everyone has some type of skin disease - infants, children, teenagers, adults and the elderly and nearly one in six (15%) of all visits to the family doctor (GP) involves a skin problem.

Dr ValksClinica Tarraula is pleased to be associated with Dr. Rudolf Valks, MD, Ph.D, a Dutch dermatologist with more than 11 years international experience. Dr Valks, who is member of the American Academy of Dermatology, has worked in the University Hospitals of Amsterdam and Madrid and has published many papers in top international scientific journals and has lectured at many international Congresses.

In Clinica Tarraula Dr Valks is able to deal with the entire range dermatological problems, which includes all diseases of the skin, hairs and nails. He not only is available for consultations but also able to undertake many operations within the clinic.
Dr Valks is particularly interested in all forms of dermatological surgery, such as:
  • Surgery to remove skin cancers with, where necessary, a cosmetic repair and
  • Cosmetic surgery, such as the removal of growths and discolorations.

  • He also treats other cosmetics problems such as
  • Acne and
  • Pigment spots.

  • as well as
  • Sexual transmitted diseases
There are over 2000 known skin diseases but only about 20 of these account for 90% of a dermatologist's workload.
The most common skin disorders include:
Skin Disorders
  • Skin cancer
  • Warts
  • Fungal infections
  • Dermatitis
  • Psoriasis - a skin disorder
  • Acne affects every teenager to one degree or another
  • Hand dermatitis, resulting from external contact with detergents and household chemicals, affects most women with young families.
  • One in six of all children develop atopic eczema
  • One in five persons suffers from cold sores (herpes simplex).
Dermatoscope
Dermatologist In the last few years, skin cancer has assumed almost epidemic proportion at least in part to the mistaken belief that tanned skin is healthy skin. Dr Valks now spends a significant part of his time operating surgically to remove such tumours.

Dr Valks uses a dermatoscope, which is a microscopic tool that is placed on the skin and gives a more precise diagnosis. This clear view of the skin can help with diagnosing skin cancers, particularly melanomas and also in differentiating melanoma skin cancer from moles or more benign pigmented nevi.
If you have any form of skin problem it is important to arrange to see a dermatologist as soon as possible, preferably when symptoms of skin disease appear, or when your current treatment is proving to be ineffective. It has been shown that an expert diagnosis results in either a rapid cure or good management of the problem, which also means less cost and suffering.
